about
Back in Jan 2019 I was asked to play some songs at a Scattering of Ashes Ceremony & Wake on the West Coast of Ireland. A group of friends and film makers had travelled from Los Angeles to say goodbye and lay to rest ‘Alison Wilke Gryphon’. As well as saying their goodbyes and celebrating her life, they chose to document their collective journey as well as Alison’s battle with Cancer. Through being there for several days I got to learn more and more about Alison, I spent time with her family and friends and watched them navigate through their grief. As they got close to completing their documentary they asked if I would write a song for the film. One of the hardest songs I’ve ever tried to write. Ultimately, I pulled on my own dealings with grief and loss & tried to map out how that journey has been for me in the past.
If you get the chance, watch ‘A hidden Star’.
lyrics
You chain yourself to a time and place
The closest you can get to one more embrace
Frozen, holding on to the breath you took when they had gone
Night into night, no dawn
Then you turn the page, and say goodbye
Look out ahead and wipe the tears from your eyes
Breath out, breath in, pray the old you comes back again
And day by day, you mend
I still go under from time to time
When the waves get rough in this heart of mine
Guess that’s the way it goes
Sorrow
Sorrow
That’s the way it goes
Sorrow
Last words on repeat
The closest you can get to hearing their voice speak
Play back, re-wind, sometimes you laugh, sometimes you cry
But year by year you get by
Then one day as you’re looking back
The smiles outnumber the waves that crash
Golden Memories, that once brought you down, bring you up with ease
And bit by bit, you find peace
I still go under from time to time
When the waves get rough in this heart of mine
That’s the way it goes
Sorrow
Sorrow
That’s the way it goes
Sorrow
Sorrow, Sorrow
Guess that’s the way it goes
Sorrow
That’s the way it goes, sorrow
Sorrow
Sorrow
